Monterey - Pebble Beach Auctions

Fall is a wonderful time of the year at Classic Showcase. As we wind down from six extraordinary days of pure exhilaration, festivities, and breathtaking automobiles at the world renowned Concours D' Elegance at Pebble Beach. As you can imagine an event of this magnitude takes years of planning. In fact preparations for each Concours begin years in advance as they strive to orchestrate a well detailed event. Collectors and enthusiasts from all over the world attend these spectacular venues and can't wait to set foot on the fairway each August. The two auctions that Classic Showcase participates in are the RM and Gooding Auctions, which we did quite well. Like the cars in their line up they both hosted very professional, elegant and memorable auctions. RM Auctions set a new world record with 31 million in vintage automobiles sold for a two-day auction. They had a 90% sale rate, selling 138 out of 153 cars. Their highest sales were for a 1938 Talbot-Lago T150-C Lago Teardrop Coupe which sold for $3,685,000, a 1964 Ford GT40 Prototype which sold for $2,502,500 and an Alfa Romeo Tipo B P3 Monoposto which sold for $2,100,000. Gooding Classic Car Auctions was also successful with their highest sale for a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTS/4 NART Spyder, selling for $3,960.000. Gooding's second highest seller was for a 1933 Duesenberg SJ Murphy, selling for $2,200,000. Their third highest sale was for a 1957 Jaguar XKSS Roadster, selling for $1,925,000.
Gooding's forth highest sale was for a 1955 Jaguar D Type, selling for $1,815,000. Christie's, once the dominate player in Monterey, ended up just shy of a podium finish, in fourth place with a 72% selling rate. Its top seller was a 1937 Talbot-Lago T150C SS Teardrop Coupe for $ 3,535,000. The two other sales that topped over one million dollars were a 1930 Bugatti Type 43A roadster at $1,115,000 and a 1965 Ferrari Type 1512 F1, at the same price. This year Classic Showcase broke 4 world records; 3 of which were for our restored Jaguar XKE's and one for our restored Porsche Speedster. To get a glimpse of these record breakers visit the following links: 1962 Jaguar XKE Roadster, 1965 Jaguar XKE Series I 4.2 FHC , 1961 Jaguar E-Type Series I 3.8 OTS , 1957 Porsche 356 Speedster

Concorso Italiano
The Concorso Italiano was also a huge success with its beautiful seaside setting at the Black Horse Golf Course. This was their 20th anniversary event, and it showed no sign of slowing down. Featured marques were the Lamborghini Muira, celebrating its 40th anniversary, as well as Alfa Romeo, a marque that would also be celebrated two days later at the venerable Pebble Beach Concours.
Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance
Every year it seems the Concours d'Elegance held in Pebble Beach couldn't possibly get any better, yet it does. This event celebrated 75 years of Pininfarina, with four cars straight from Turin, 12 in the anniversary display, and many more an aisle over in the Ferrari classes. There was a centennial celebration of Delage and there was even a class for Chevrolet Small-Block cars with European custom coachwork.
"The Best of Show” award went to Sam and Emily Mann and Alfredo Brener, who shared the entry of the late 1937 Delage D8-120 S Pourtout Aero Coupe. Brener bought the car four years ago and began restoring it, than handed it over to Mann.

The collector car market is very much alive and thriving as Classic cars continue to spark the interest of seasoned collectors and new collectors alike. As the desire to own and collect classic cars increases so does the value of these vintage beauties. The collector today is very discerning, knows what he wants, and understands that it is an investment of quality, beauty and perfection. Over the past couple of years we have seen the market grow and it is very exciting.

Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races
On August 19-21 the Legendary Chaparrals were featured at Laguna Seca's 32nd Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races Presented by Chrysler. The cars were part of a tribute to "Great American Specials". The Chaparral, Spanish for road runner, were a series of innovative race cars built by Jim Hall and Hap Sharp to challenge the "big guns" of the automotive racing world. During a time when major manufacturers, mostly European, were dominiating racing circuits around the world the Chaparral championed the underdog and captured the imaginations of Americans. Thier work revolutionized the racing world by introducing new technologies. They introduced the first moveable wing and thier work with aerodynamics, ground effects, and composite materials set the standard for racing during their time.

How do I learn the history of my vehicle? Robert Jones, St. Paul, MN

Dear Robert,
That is a very good question and it all depends on the information accumulated on the vehicle. If you purchased the vehicle with receipts or paperwork verifying the authenticity, then you have completed the hardest part of the task. If you have no paperwork on your vehicle, then you will have to inspect your car for as many numbers as you can find. This includes the engine, transmission, body, and vehicle identification numbers. You will need these to research your vehicle.
There are several sources to research your vehicle history. The internet is a great tool, on-line you can find some of the history through car clubs, specialty car part suppliers, etc. Sometimes you can check past ownership of registration through the DMV. For specific vehicles like Porsches, you can get the vehicle factory build sheet with certificate of authenticity, formally known as a Kardex. This will list the previous owners of the car. For British cars, you can get the same information through a Heritage certificate as well as the main distributor and first owner. This can be a tedious task, but well worth it. Past ownership information is very important. If you can, speak to the previous owner to get information on any restorations, previous service and updates, accidents, vehicle driving habits, and any other questions you may have. Some services require a fee to research the requested information or may require verification of current ownership.
Once you get the history and details, this will help you document your vehicle so you can see where to go from there.
It can take some time and you will need patience!

Sincerely,
Tom
