The San Antonio Jaguar Club (SAJC) is putting the final touches on Jaguar Club of North America’s (JCNA) 2009 Challenge Championship. The event to be held “deep in the heart of Texas” May 19-23 promises to be a fun-filled event for Jaguar enthusiasts and their families.

SAJC President Fran Curran says the San Antonio area offers an abundance of activities for visitors. “There’s so much to see here,” she says. “San Antonio is one of the most historic cities in the U.S.” Best known for its San Antonio de Valero, commonly called the Alamo, other centuries-old missions, and the magical Riverwalk lined with hundreds of restaurants, hotels, night spots and shops, the city is bustling with excitement.

 

Headquarters for the Challenge Championship (CC) is the Menger Hotel, which organizer (and SAJC treasurer, concours chief judge, webmaster and newsletter editor) Brian Blackwell says is an elegant and historic hotel, “it is to San Antonio what the Waldorf is to New York City.” Built in 1859, the Menger Hotel is within walking distance of the Alamo, Riverwalk and the Rivercenter Mall.  When visitors want a break from CC events, they can check out the hotel’s heated swimming pool, full-service spa, fitness room, and jacuzzi.

 

As for the CC events, there are many that JCNA members and guests will want to experience – from a Texas barbeque lunch and excursions to the National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg; Luckenbach, Texas, and the rest of the Texas Hill Country, to a river taxi ride to a special reception at a private club along the Riverwalk and much more.

 

Of course, highlights throughout the week will be rally and slalom events designed to test the endurance and precision driving skills of car owners, and the culminating event, the Challenge Championship Concours d’Elegance on Main Plaza in downtown San Antonio on Friday, May 22. Steve Kennedy, JCNA president and member of the Rocky Mountain Jaguar Club, says he is looking forward to welcoming the public as well as all of the local and North American participants who will assure the general audience a thrilling experience of viewing more than 150 Jaguars at the Concours. Jaguar owners will vie for top honors and national ranking at this stop on the JCNA Concours circuit.

 

Admission to the car display on Main Plaza is free. The public will be invited to cast their votes for “People’s Choice” honors by contributing to the Jaguar owners who have invested in a collection box, with proceeds earmarked for The Haven for Hope Project, a non-profit organization in San Antonio helping people transform their lives. The public also will have the opportunity to join the San Antonio Jaguar Club and commemorative posters will be available for purchase.

 

SAJC, the host club for the 2009 Challenge Championship, has been in existence since 1989, when it was known as the San Antonio Jaguar V12 Club. “As time passed, many Jaguar owners of various marques were interested in joining our Club, and in 1991, the San Antonio Jaguar V12 Club was renamed The San Antonio Jaguar Club,” Curran says. “On July 29, 1994, the Club was incorporated and registered as the 50th member of the national organization, the Jaguar Clubs of North America.”

 

SAJC’s president says their club members are working hard to host their first Challenge Championship and hope JCNA members and guests support the premier event by visiting San Antonio in May. More than 250 participants and as many as 5,000 spectators are expected to attend. 1961 Jaguar XKE Series 1 3.8 OTS

Completion

A very important car regarding Jaguar history!  1961 was the first year of the XKE and this car is Chassis number 180! The car has benefited from a comprehensive total restoration to Jaguar standards. This is a matching numbers car and will be shown in several Concours before it starts being driven on a regular basis. We are very pleased with the results of this Jaguar. 1956 Jaguar XK-140 MC OTS

This is a numbers matching car that is being restored as it was when new. Its original color combination is pastel blue with blue and grey interior. This is a high level restoration with no expense being spared. Please see the summer newsletter to view our progress.

     
 

 

1967 Jaguar 340 Sedan

Our client purchased this car brand new in Germany in 1964. He then brought the car to the United States where he has enjoyed driving the car for over 40 years. The engine has been rebuilt twice over the last 40 years and has been maintained on a regular basis. He realized it still had its original paint and interior and in need of a restoration which he entrusted us to do. During the restoration process, the car was completely disassembled. All the mechanics were restored, the bright work, interior and paint work was all redone. Our client is extremely happy and will pass this car on to his son. Hopefully he will have the same passion as his father and upkeep this beautiful Jaguar for many years to come.

     

 

 


January 2009 Auctions Scottsdale, Arizona

 

January 2009, Classic Showcase attended numerous auctions in Scottsdale, Arizona, where we consigned and sold numerous cars at the much anticipated auction. Despite an uncertain economy, numerous records were set, indicating the Classic Car market is still holding strong, and setting the tone for 2009. Over 200,000 car enthusiasts and collectors came to enjoy the show, not to mention all the television viewers!

Another auction we attended was the Keith McCormick Palm Springs Auction on February 20-22nd, 2009. The Palm Springs event attracted hundreds of car enthusiasts to Coachella Valley. Held in the parking areas of the Spa Hotel and Casino, in Palm Springs, the auction featured a 1961 black limousine once owned by Marilyn Monroe, officials said. During the three-day event organizers auctioned more than 500 cars and sold over 300. Yet another testament to the ever strong classic car market was proven here.

The following weekend, February 28-March 1st, Tom attended the 2nd Annual Desert Classic Concours in Palm Springs. He showed a recently restored 1961 E Type outside bonnet latch with flat floors that took 1st place in the European Cars 1946-1974 class! There weremany entries in this class, ranging from Mercedes Gulwing & Roadsters, 190 SL’s, Porsches, Austin Healy's and Jaguars, to a very rare Pegaso. Tom will definitely be attending next year to show another classic from his collection!

    • Tom, I am looking to restore and possibly sell my 1962 Mark II. With so many different references and opinions, how can I figure out the value of my car? What factors should I consider that would make it worth more or less?

Mark, within your outlined budget, we can deliver your car to a High-End/Driver level with good performance upgrades. Car collectors are interested in purchasing the best quality, number one cars. High-end restored vehicles are bringing in top dollars in today's marketplace and this would be a great investment.
 
Question:
    • Hi Tom, as I move closer to retirement I think from time to time about my old 73 E-type, actually about having a new one restored. So, I'm just trying to get a "ball park" unofficial estimate of what the restoring cost might be.  I know that it varies depending upon condition of the donor car, but again I'm just trying to get a sense of whether it is 50K, 70K and 100K?

First of all we need to know if it’s a roadster or a coupe. If it's a roadster it can range from $50,000 - $160,000 or if it's a coupe $30,000 - $130,000. Of course the range varies depending on the condition of the vehicle, both mechanical and cosmetic.
    Question:
    • Hi Tom, I found a car for sale in Hemming's that could very well be my Grandmother's car that she bought new in 1953 and sold in the early 70's. I would like to purchase it if it is. How can I trace the VIN# back to the original owner? 

    Tom Says:

    This is a very difficult task with sometimes no results. DMV records would be a good start, especially if you know the original VIN number or license plate number. If the registration was not kept current all this information may not be easily obtainable. We would also recommend going on the internet and contacting an organization or car club that keeps a registry on these vehicles.

    • We know everyone was glued to their TV set over the weekend watching the Scottsdale auctions. So for this week's question, let loose with your analysis, opinion, observation and insights. Did the weekend set a good tone for this year's collector car prices, or are we in for more of the same?

    Scottsdale in the classic car market was strong. Over 1,700 cars were sold for over $130 million! These were classic cars that exchanged hands and went to new owners, some of the cars were down in value but still selling. The excitement is definitely there.     Both the Rally and the Tour go from the hotel to the legendary former post office made world famous in the song by Texans Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings. After we get you from the hotel downtown, the tour will show you the beautiful wildflowers and scenery of the South Texas Hill Country. At the end of the Tour, you will arrive at the Luckenbach, Texas, post office, where you can look around, have a beverage, and take photos. From there, you will receive directions to cover the 10 mile distance to the German settled city of Fredericksburg.

    Maintaining Your Classic for the Spring Season
    Make sure all of your car's vitals are good. Check fluids and air pressure, read instruments properly to make sure they are all operating well.

    For maximum efficiency, make sure the timing of the engine and calibration of the carburetors are good.

    The gasoline used in a car is important. Use a high quality gas to prevent any dieseling effect. If you have a pinging effect, the problem could be your timing or carburetion. You may need to use an octane booster if you drive a car with a performance operating engine.

    Shine the car and buff it to perfection. We like the Maguire and 3M polishes, as they are user friendly. Also try the products from Griot's. Take your time when detailing your car. It can be a fun and relaxing experience.

    Finally, plan for lots of car events and activities. Take your favorite companion on a day trip... oh, and take a friend too.
