Hilton Head Island Concours d’Elegance & Motoring Festival

November 1st and 2nd, Tom attended the Concours d’Elegance and Motoring Festival at Hilton Head. It was very established and impressive with their honored selection of cars from the very early era pre- 1916 or “Brass Era”. The cars were marvelous! Other categories included Micro cars, Performance vehicles, European luxury, Hot Rods, Orphan Marques, Classics, Racers, and Motorcycles. An example of the unique cars on display was the Best in Show Winner, for this year, which was a 1928 Packard 443- very impressive!

The Red Jaguar 1963 XKE OTS is owned by the VP of JCNA Dick Maury who has owned this car since 1973. He performed the restoration himself in his garage. The car has been SE champion in the JCNA since 2004 when Dick started showing it. In 2006, it scored high enough to be third in the country with a average score of 99.97. He showed it at the Hilton Head Concourse in 2005 and won Best in Class. In 2008, Dick returned and scored a Second place out of 11 cars. (The first photo is the 1963 XKE OTS).

Worldwide Auction, Hilton Head SC

November 1st, Tom attended, consigned and sold a number of cars at the Hilton Head Sports & Classic Car Auction that is presented by Worldwide Auctioneers. The current economic conditions were present in everyone's mind however, uncertainty did not seem to hold back several big sales. Regardless of an apparent economic slowdown in the United States, high quality cars are still showing to be an excellent investment.

Q: Tom- I am retired and leaving the country to travel throughout Europe for the next year. Can you advise me on what I should do to prepare my vehicle for long term storage? –Bruce, CA

A: Bruce- The gasoline should be drained out of the gas tank and fill the radiator with antifreeze. The car should be put on blocks or jack stands. You should put a little bit of Marvel Mystery oil in all spark plug holes. You should remove the battery from the car and charge it on a battery tender. Or you can leave in the battery and disconnect it and leave it on the tender. I recommend removing the battery. Inflate the tires to maximum tire pressure. Lubricate the door rubber and pivot points, hood hinges, and trunk hinges. If the car is a convertible, store it with the top up. Polish the car and cover the car with a nice clean car cover that is clean underneath as well to protect the paint.

Q: Tom- My wife and I are in the market to buy a classic car. We have heard about the auctions and we were wondering where you suggest we buy a car from; an auction or an independent seller?- Bill, WA

A: Bill- Auctions and independent sellers are both good sources to buy quality classic cars. You really should do your homework to know about the type of car that you are buying, know the value of the car, and it is important to understand what is correct and proper. If you are buying the car from an auction, make sure the auction is a reputable auction. If you buy the car from an individual seller, or the original owner, always ask if they can provide documentation and receipts from service and history of ownership. Again, do your homework about the car so that you know the person is being truthful about the car. It is always best to have a buyers inspection performed by a reputable company on the car you would like to buy.

Q: Tom- With the economy being weak, are collectable classic cars holding their value?-Earl, NY

A: Earl- Yes the number one quality collectable cars are holding their value very well and there are no signs of this changing. Classic cars are a good investment for the collector. The classic car market is strong for high quality vehicles.

Don't let the winter months cause unnecessary damage to your classic. If you plan to store your classic this winter, follow these simple precautions to keep your baby safe and happy.

1. Drain the petrol. If you do not, then add a few drops of additive so your gasoline in the tank will not break down or go bad and cause problems to the carburetors or fuel pump. Marvell Mystery Oil is an amazing product and you'll find it works wonders. To add oil to the gas, put a small amount into the cylinders.

2. Disconnect the battery. If it is very cold, remove the battery completely and place on a trickle charger.

3. Place your vehicle on jack stands. This will save your tires from getting a flat spot from sitting. If you don't have access to a stand then slightly over inflate the tires to compensate for the amount of time they won't be in use.

4. Make sure the car has plenty of anti-freeze.

5. Keep your classic in a dry environment; if possible a climate controlled one. Never store a car on the dirt. When wet it can cause rust. Always try to park your car on the pavement.

6. Finally, give her one last polish, put a car cover on, say your goodbye, and put her away until you are ready to take the scenic route again.
